One of the most frustrating things is finding a good laptop that will suit you as a student and work for you. There are many things to consider when you are buying a laptop, which is why it is important to choose wisely. Most people do not invest the time or effort to choose a laptop well. Buying the wrong laptop means you are stuck with it. If you pay a lot of money for a laptop, you do not want to waste it.

My Laptop Buying Guide

This buying guide will give you some tips and advice on what to look for when buying a laptop. Before you put pen to paper, use your common sense.

What is your budget?

Student budgets are often tight. If your budget is limited, you need to decide exactly what your needs are. Are you a student that wants a notebook for casual learning about things that do not have to be that powerful? Do you want to do homework and word processing? Are you playing games? These are important factors when it comes to getting your laptop.

Laptops are split into two major categories, there are desktop replacement laptops, and then there are notebooks.

Notebooks are smaller and lighter but lack the power of desktop replacements. There are exceptions to this; for example, the Alienware brand makes a whole range of high-performance notebooks. However, as a business or gaming laptop, these tend to be much more expensive than the average laptop.

Desktop replacements are powerful, expensive and weigh a tonne. The most popular notebooks tend to be the 15.6-inch screen size when it comes to notebooks. This is smaller than the 17 inches of the desktop replacements but in the same range as the 14-inch screen. Notebooks vary in weight from just under 2kg for the cheapest models to just under 4kg for the most high-end. If you are looking for a lightweight model, check out the 2.2kg Macbook Air or the Dell XPS 13.

What about Power?

If you plan to do a lot of gaming, it is advisable to get a powerful processor. For example, if you are looking for a gaming laptop, the incredibly powerful 2.7GHz Intel i7 processor would be a good choice. If you are more of a casual gamer, you could consider one of the i5’s or i7’s. All laptops have processors inside them.

RAM is another important factor to consider when it comes to power. RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is important if you do lots of multitasking. The more RAM your laptop has, the more it runs. The higher the number, the faster it will run. So, for example, 8GB of RAM means that it will run 8 things or programs simultaneously. Most laptops will come with 4GB of RAM. However, this is not enough if you want to do gaming.

Before deciding which model you want to get, make sure that you have decided which of the different types of RAM you need.

I mean, do you need that fast processor, or do you want to play games?

Graphics

Graphics are important if you want to be playing games. A cramped graphics card is more than adequate for basic net browsing or word processing. However, if you are looking for more graphics power, you will want to consider getting graphics cards.

Graphics cards do vary in price. The least expensive and the most basic graphics cards are integrated graphics. These tend to be very effective, but you cannot do more. If you want more, then you will need a dedicated graphics card.

Storage Drive

Most laptops come with 2 or 3 hard drives, a 1Tb HDD and a 128Gb SSD. The SSD is super fast, and for obvious reasons, storage tends to be cheaper on SSD drives. The SSD isn’t ideal for playing video games; however, for enjoyment purposes, they are fine.

If you want more storage for images, music, videos and movies, you should consider getting a 1Tb or larger hard drive.

Considering all the above, you can easily find a good laptop for your student for less than $1,000. However, we also have some great deals which will last you until graduation. Contact us today if you are interested in getting a laptop for your needs.

You are probably buzzing with anticipation if you are currently a student and are just about to leave school. You are probably thinking, “I cannot wait to go on the retail experience and earn money through being an entrepreneur.” Like most young people out there, you will be starting as an entrepreneur without a salary. Ideally, you will have a part-time job that you have worked towards for the last few years, but now is your final push, and you can start your own business. Of course, like many in that age group, you are going to be spending your next few months saving up a set of wheels so you can drive around your new city. Of course, that dream is driving a big car with loads of boot space, lots of gadgets, leather seats and all of that. However, who can afford that?

What you can afford

Of course, after all those hours of working, you probably live in a relatively small apartment, maybe even a shared house. You will not have the space for an expensive set of wheels or lots of accessories like fancy seats. That being said, what you need is a laptop that will allow you to keep busy, work and even learn a new skill. The trick is, though, that as a student, you are not really in a position to spend a small fortune on a laptop and on top of that, you do not have the resources to pay for repairs in case the device is damaged. Therefore, what should you buy?

The first thing you should look at is the price. You should be able to get a decent laptop for under $300. While you can, of course, spend more, you want to consider what you need your laptop to be able to do.

A good laptop will allow you to watch videos, take photographs, edit videos, play games and all of those other things. You are going to be using it for most of your day-to-day tasks.

So, do you need a laptop?

Of course, student life is not all about just learning, working and getting around. There is a lot of socializing involved. Your laptop can organize your social life too.

Most students live with other people and either shares a house or an apartment. If you are sharing an apartment, chances are you will share the kitchen. This can be quite loud and frustrating, and it can cause problems if you are trying to study. However, all those things can be organized and sorted out by your computer.

You can manage the people you live with or spend time using your laptop. You could use Skype, Google Hangouts, or Facetime to organize your social lives.

Most apartments probably have wireless internet, and that means that you can easily download some applications to allow everyone to meet up online when it suits them.

Of course, if your laptop is going to help you work, it is also important to get a laptop with enough storage space to store your music, files, and images, for example.

It is also important that you have the right specification to get the most out of your laptop. You need to ensure that you are not spending all your money on features you will never use. With the new advances in 4G technology, more and more young people are ditching their smartphones for something a little lighter and can take a lot more photos.

When you find a laptop you like and decide how much storage you want, there are a few other things to think about.

1. Budget

The first thing you should consider is how much you are willing to spend. Do not spend more than you can afford. A laptop that is too expensive in real terms has many unnecessary features. This will affect the battery life. The last thing you want is to have your laptop die in the middle of a project.

2. Look for a Laptop with SSD

SSD stands for Solid State Drive. This is a memory chip that is commonly found on laptops. It is much faster than a standard laptop hard drive. You will notice a difference if you use your laptop on your commute or at work.

3. Processor

Your processor is the brain of your laptop. Think of it as the CPU or Central Processing Unit. The faster the processor, the faster your laptop. Most laptops have between 2-4 cores. The newer processors will have hyperthreading which increases the number of cores.

4. Memory

Memory can be categorized into two different types, Memory speed and Memory capacity. Memory speed is generally measured in MHz or Megahertz. Memory capacity is measured in GB or gigabytes. You will need enough memory to store all of your files.

5. Storage

The amount of storage you will need depends on what you are doing with your laptop. If you are a gamer, you will want more storage than you would if you only needed the laptop for browsing and emailing. Also, if your school/college requires you to have a specific amount of storage for your work, you may be required to have one.

6. Laptop Battery

Most laptops come with fairly decent battery life. However, they are generally short. Consider how long you intend to use your laptop. If you travel a lot and need a laptop that you can still work on through every airport security check, try to score one with decent battery life.

7. Additional Features

Bells and whistles lure most people. It is fun to open your laptop and find a 1080p screen, a fingerprint reader and a stylus. Most of these features have in common that they don’t do very much. If you have enough storage, a good processor, a good graphics card and a decent battery life, then any laptop you buy will be suitable for its purpose.

8. Additional Software

Some laptops come with software included with your hardware. This is the case for Chromebook laptops. This type of laptop is lacking in features. However, it is perfect for students who only need it for online work and not for playing games.

9. Brand

For most people, paying more for a laptop means getting a better laptop. However, it is hard to know what laptop will be good. Brand names are seen as a mark of quality. Again, it is hard to know what brand will be good and what brand will not be good. You will benefit from spending more on a laptop from a reliable brand.

10. Colour

Colour does matter. People buy laptops for work and school. Sometimes you will want to put your laptop away in a cupboard. Colour makes little difference to your laptop if you use it all the time. If you put it in a cupboard at home, consider that the color may be distracting.

Final Word

There is a lot that goes into laptop choice. We hope that this guide has helped you make the right decision when buying a laptop. Suppose it has not; head over to a local computer store and try out the laptops. Pay the one that you think will work best for you.
